Sogamoso

Studies and investigations for the design of the dam, appurtenant works and related equipment for the Sogamoso Hydroelectric Project.

General:

  • Installed capacity: 1,035 MW.
  • Reservoir volume: 4,800 Mm³.
  • Source of water for the project: Sogamoso River.

Civil works:

     Dam:

  • Heigth: 190 m.
  • Type: Concrete face gravel and rock fill dam.
  • Crest: 330 masl; 345-m long and 9-m wide crest.

     Diversion Works:

  • Upstream cofferdam: Roller compacted concrete; 53 m high above the riverbed foundation rock.
  • Tunnels: Two. Curved-wall horseshoe section, 9.5 m net diameter; 840 m and 879 m long, respectively, concrete lined.
  • Slope protection: downstream of the dam, RCC slab to be constructed simultaneously with the fills to serve as a control structure in the event the river overpasses the dam during the first year of dam construction.

     Spillway:

  • Location: Left abutment of the dam.
  • Component: 72 m wide, four 15 x 20 m radial gates.
  • Tailrace channel: 354 m long by 72 m wide.
  • Maximum discharge: 17,100 m³/s

     Low-level outlet:

  • This project component consists of a concrete structure housing two pairs of floodgates.

Power generation works:

     Underground powerhouse:

  • Length: 163.1 m.
  • Width: 24.7 m.
  • Height: 45.7 m.
  • Equipment: 4 Francis Turbines.

     Intake:

  • Inclined structure, located on the right abutment, composed of four submerged structures conveying 800 m³/s through four 6.1-m diameter, 270-m long headrace tunnels to the underground powerhouse.

     Tailrace tunnel:

  • Turbine discharge is initially conveyed through a 46-m long horseshoe tunnel, 14.8 m high by 12 m wide, followed by two horseshoe tunnels 510 m long and 10.45 m by 8.5 m section.

     Access tunnel:

  • Access to the underground powerhouse is anticipated through a 370-m long two-way traffic tunnel.

Social component:

The Environmental Impact Study was prepared for the Sogamoso Hydroelectric Project. It Included preparation of the social and environmental baseline, assessment, description and prioritization of impacts and design of the Environmental Management Plan. The studies included mainly the following aspects:

  • Social diagnosis of the local population affected by the project. Fieldwork: interviews and direct observation. Design and development of consultation workshops with the community and application of a socioeconomic and land census.
  • Design of social management programs; amongst these programs were the resettlement of the population and the information and compromise with the community programs.
