Bucaramanga Potable Water Supply System
Detail designs for bid of civil works, main and auxiliary
electromechanical equipment, electric power for construction, substations
for connection and associated works, telecommunications, instrumentation
and control systems.
The environmental study of alternatives was prepared
as part of the feasibility studies of the project, in which an environmental
and social diagnosis of the Umpala, Manso and Oro river basins was conducted.
The environmental analysis of the proposed alternatives was prepared,
identifying sensitive and vulnerable areas and identifying and describing
impacts, which allowed defining the most viable alternative from the
social and environmental standpoints.
The studies included designs in the areas of mapping,
topography, roadways, geology, geomorphology, geotechnical, hydraulics,
structural, environmental, electrical and mechanical engineering.
The designs included:
- Modeling
of the distribution mains and the study of unaccounted water.
- A
65-m high earth dam, creating a 30,000,000 m³ reservoir.
- Six
3.5 m diameter tunnels with a total length of 19 km and
16.6 km of channels.
- The
Manco, Oro, Piedras Blancas, Umpala and Guayabales Rivers intakes.
- Two-stage
water treatment plant, with a capacity of 3.38 m³/s.
- Conveyance
network 52.8 km long and distribution network 154 km long.
- Design
of 24 reinforced concrete storage tanks with storage capacity between
1.000 m³ and 10.000 m³, storing a total 68,400 m³ of
water.
- Four
pumping stations ranging between 30 l/s and 350 l/s, and hydraulic
heads between 38 m and 202 m.
- Hydroelectric
power generation of 27.5 MW.
- Design
of a 50-km long conveyance system with variable diameters between
8” and 45”, and variable pressure between 15 psi and 400
psi.
- Telemetry
and control center; installation of the geographical data system for
mapping of existing distribution networks on the ARCAD System.
- Budget,
construction schedule, socioeconomic and environmental impact studies,
environmental management plans, construction and operation risks studies.
Additionally, conversion to a computer design of the
City of Bucaramanga’s metropolitan area was conducted through
CADD and ARCAD programs.
GIS mapping was furnished by CAMB in the ARC-INFO system. The database
was installed for each network component: storage tanks, pipes, valves,
fire hydrants, pressure-reducing valves and accessories. The data was
processed using ARCAD including: diameter, materials, type, storage
tanks and districts. Total network length is 1,070 km with variable
diameters between 3” and 18”.
Social component:
During the design stage the environmental impact
study of the selected alternative was prepared. The studies included
the following activities:
- Ecological
characterization of the basins.
- Study
of the vegetation through field sampling and assessment of the biomass
to be affected by the works.
- Characterization
of associated fauna.
- Study
of climate and hydrology of the basins encompassed by the project.
- Geological
and soils study.
- Inventory
of water use along the basin downstream of the intake structures.
- Socioeconomic
study of the communities within the area of influence. Application
of the census; fieldwork: visits and interviews. Design and execution
of consultation procedures with the communities in the area of influence.
- Identification,
evaluation and prioritization of environmental impacts.
- Design
of the environmental and social programs.
- Design
of the follow-up and environmental monitoring programs.
- Management
plans for seasonal crops along the Oro River basin.
