Sources for the City of Cali’s future
water supply until year 2025
Among the evaluation of the water use schemes carried out by institutions
such as CVC, EMCALI and EPSA, complemented with recent studies developed
by INGETEC, water supply alternatives for the City of Cali have been
searched for from viable technical, economic and environmental standpoints.
The studies carried out recently by INGETEC indicate twelve alternatives
for water supply for the City of Cali. Upon having analyzed the various
alternatives, CVC selected three projects, two of which refer to the
control of the Cali River, involving a small volume for the first stage
and a second stage enlargement by transfer of the upper Rio Grande to
the Cali River basin. The third project refers to the construction of
an impounding reservoir on the Timba River to control flow that could
meet demand until year 2025.
Main characteristics:
The alternative on the Cali River comprises a small 12 Mm³ reservoir,
impounded by means of a 97-m high dam that will ensure a mean flow to
the San Antonio and La Reforma Plants of 1.8 and 1.0 m³/sec, respectively,
and convey an additional flow of 0.73 m³/sec, through a
12-km long conveyance system down to La Reforma Plant to be upgraded.
Expansion
of this system is envisaged to be conducted during a second stage by
transfer of the Rio Grande towards the Cali River basin, conveying additional
flow through a 12-km long system and upgrading La Reforma Plant to handle
a flow of 1.35 m³/sec required to meet the potable water demand
for Southern Cali’s expanded areas.
The
third project consists of controlling the Timba River, located south
of the City of Cali, by building a 41-m high dam to control a flow of
6.3 m³/sec that will be conveyed through a system of tunnels, siphons
and open channels, down to the Pance sector, along a 40-km system. Raw
water will subsequently be treated in a conventional plant to fulfill
Cali´s water demand until 2025.
